Michael Rankin - Biography
Michael’s career in the arts began as a photojournalist for the Moose Jaw Times Herald at the age of 16 and then later at the Calgary Herald. His artistic pursuits changed course in the early 1980s and Michael moved into the field of art transportation and logistics--designing and constructing art shipping containers for the assembly and dispersal of fine art in Canadian and international collections.
After realizing that framing did not always maintain and preserve the integrity of the artwork, Michael began to study framing and art presentation. He designed and manufactured his own frame stock and opened his first framing studio in the mid 1980s.
Over the years, he became a master framer and maker of fine art picture frame moulding and display cabinetry. His career in presentation/preservation management of art has spanned over 35 years. His many clients have been art galleries, private collectors and corporate and provincial art collections in Saskatchewan and Alberta.
Michael’s philosophy is that the framed environment should not only be aesthetically pleasing, but also should be a place of safety and security for a work of art—protecting and maintaining the original integrity. The frames he builds today are about simplicity of design, richness of finish and stability of construction.
